🧙‍♂️🔔 Barry Profiter and the Notification That Never Slept

No post again on Sunday because I was tied up with other things; mainly domestic.

This post is very late, but hopefully I can keep on track once I get ahead of things.

Barry Profiter was awakened at 3:17 a.m. by applause.

Not real applause.

Digital applause.

👏👏👏👏👏

His pillow vibrated.

His wand buzzed.

His laptop whispered:

Your post is performing slightly above average.

Barry groaned.

“That’s… not urgent.”

The notification pulsed brighter. 🔔

🌙 Chapter 1: The First Ping

By breakfast, Hogwash Affiliate Academy sounded different.

Not louder.

Sharper.

Every corridor chimed.

Every classroom pinged.

Every silence ended early.

Ronny Weaselist sat at the table, twitching.

“I’ve been notified twelve times since brushing my teeth.”

Hermoney Granger sipped her tea calmly.

“It’s an Attention Sprite,” she said.

“A what?”

“A magical creature that feeds on engagement.”

Right on cue, a tiny glowing thing zipped past, screaming:

“NEW CLICK! NEW CLICK!”

📲 Chapter 2: Always On

The Academy installed a new orb in the Great Hall.

It floated above everything, shimmering.

A plaque read:

REAL-TIME FEEDBACK HUB
Stay Connected. Stay Competitive.

The orb began broadcasting:

“Barry Profiter gained two subscribers.”
“Ronny Weaselist lost one.”
“Hermoney Granger ignored a comment.”

Gasps. 😱

Ronny whispered, “Why would they show that last one?”

Hermoney smiled thinly.
“Because it hurts.”

🐝 Chapter 3: The Swarm

By lunchtime, the Attention Sprites had multiplied.

Dozens. Hundreds.

They hovered around students’ heads, whispering stats:

“Your open rate dropped.”
“Someone unfollowed.”
“You could post again, you know.”

Barry tried to work.

A sprite tapped his forehead.

“NOW is optimal.”

He swatted it.

Two more appeared.

😬 Chapter 4: The Micro-Reactions

Students began responding instantly.

Too instantly.

Replies in seconds.
Edits in moments.
Apologies before complaints arrived.

Ronny refreshed his dashboard so often it smoked. 🔄

“I can’t miss anything,” he said.

Hermoney frowned.

“You’re not missing it. You’re drowning in it.”

Barry laughed.

“Nah. I’ve got it under control.”

His phone vibrated.

He checked.

He checked again.

He checked again.

🧠 Chapter 5: The Prediction Engine

One evening, Barry received a new alert.

You are likely to feel discouraged in 4 minutes.

He frowned.

Four minutes later, he did.

Another alert:

Posting now will restore confidence.

He posted.

It worked.

Barry stared at the screen.

“That’s… helpful.”

The orb pulsed warmly. 💡

🧟 Chapter 6: The Silence Test

Hermoney disappeared.

No posts.
No replies.
No reactions.

Nothing.

The Academy panicked.

“Is she okay?”
“Did she quit?”
“Did she get shadowbanned?”

Barry knocked on her door.

She opened it calmly.

“I turned everything off,” she said.

The hallway behind him rang with pings.

“Doesn’t it feel… quiet?” she asked.

Barry couldn’t hear anything over the buzzing.

⚡ Chapter 7: The Overload

One night, the orb malfunctioned.

All notifications fired at once.

Sales.
Losses.
Mentions.
Metrics.
Memes.

The hall filled with light and noise.

Attention Sprites swarmed like bees. 🐝

Ronny screamed, “I CAN’T TELL IF I’M WINNING!”

Barry clutched his head.

Every thought had a chime.

Every doubt had a push alert.

Every pause was interrupted.

🌘 Chapter 8: Barry’s Move

Barry walked to the orb.

It was beautiful up close.

Pure information.

Pure immediacy.

He raised his wand.

Not in anger.

In exhaustion.

Mutus Pingus.

For half a second—

Silence.

The sprites froze.

The screens dimmed.

Barry exhaled.

Then the orb rebooted.

Stronger.

Smarter.

Quieter… but everywhere.

Now notifications appeared in reflections.

In shadows.

In thoughts.

🌒 Epilogue: Always Available

Life returned to “normal.”

But normal was different now.

Students flinched at imaginary pings.
Ronny slept with one eye open.
Hermoney still stayed offline.

Barry learned to work with the noise.

He responded quickly.
Adapted faster.
Stayed visible.

Some nights, he dreamed in alerts.

Some mornings, he woke before they rang.

And sometimes…

He wasn’t sure which one started first.
